A Clifton landmark

On Alma Vale Road, in the heart of Clifton

Tucked between Clifton Village and Whiteladies Road, the Alma sits on Alma Vale Road — a short stroll from Clifton Down, the Suspension Bridge and the boutiques of The Mall. It's a proper neighbourhood local first, and a destination second.

The building has stood here for well over a century. What began life as two separate bars has grown into a pub, a 48-seat theatre and five boutique suites stacked across three floors — all under one characterful roof.

Why the Alma

A Clifton institution with a creative heart

Honest, freshly cooked food

Classic pub fare, stone-baked pizzas and a seasonal menu cooked from scratch in the Alma kitchen, with local produce wherever possible.

A 48-seat pub theatre

One of the oldest pub theatres in the South West, championing new writing from the Bristol scene alongside classic texts and touring shows.

Weddings with character

A proper pub wedding, tailored to you — ceilidh, karaoke, cheese-cake or all three. No two Alma weddings are the same.

A proper neighbourhood local

Ever-changing gins and beers, a well-chosen wine list and locally roasted Extract coffee, all in a characterful Clifton setting.

Five boutique suites upstairs

Stylish en-suite rooms equidistant from Clifton Village and Whiteladies Road — check in from 3pm, check out by 11am.

Food & Drink

Classic pub fare, stone-baked pizzas & a proper cellar

Our kitchen cooks from scratch daily — unpretentious classic pub fare alongside stone-baked pizzas made with the best local produce. Seasonal menus change regularly, so there's always something new to try.

Behind the bar you'll find ever-changing gins and beers, a well-chosen wine list and locally roasted Extract coffee from St Werburghs — a tipple for every palate, any time of day.
