Welcome to the Alma Theatre!
Back to Home
The South West's oldest pub theatre
Since opening its doors in 1997, the Alma Theatre has been at the heart of Bristol's fringe theatre scene — a 48-seat black box above the bar that has hosted hundreds of productions, from world premieres to classic texts and the best of the city's theatre companies.
It's an intimate, characterful space with tiered seating and a flexible stage — perfect for new writing, comedy nights, visiting work and scratch performances. There isn't a bad seat in the house.
Ticket Info
We've joined up with Ticket Tailor for our new booking system. If you are not redirected to this new system using the THEATRE BOOKINGS links on the website click here.
If you have any problems booking, or can't check to see if tickets are available, give us a ring on 0117 973 5171 and we'll sort it out directly. Alternatively, email theatre@almatavernandtheatre.co.uk and either Holly or Ollie, our rhyming theatre team will get back in touch!
Pre-theatre dining
If you fancy coming to watch a show, why not make a night of it and get 25% off your pre-theatre meal?! Booking is essential.
You're welcome to take a drink up with you, but please ensure you arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you can do so in good time before the performance.
Accessibility
Due to the size and location of the theatre we are unfortunately not fully accessible to those with mobility issues. The theatre can only be reached by narrow staircases that lead on to either the stage or the back of the auditorium. If you are interested in visiting our theatre and have and concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch with a member of the team. Additionally, as it is such a small space we do not have a hearing induction loop in place and therefore any persons with hearing issues may not be able to hear the show.
Refunds & returns policy
Refunds are only possible with over one week notice of your show date. You will then be entitled to the full ticket price, minus the non-refundable £1 per ticket admin fee.
If you let us know with less than one weeks' notice we will endeavor to resell your tickets and will be able to offer you a refund (minus the £1 admin charge) if we are able to do so.
Refunds can take up to two weeks to be processed by Stripe, or 72 hours by Paypal.
When shows have sold out online there will be a Waitlist prompt on the listing, where you can sign up to our waiting/returns list to be notified by email when any tickets become available.
Latecomers Policy
We advise arriving to the Alma for a performance 15 minutes before the show is due to start to allow you enough time to buy a drink and use the facilities.
The auditorium is very small, meaning that once a show is running any latecomers may be very disruptive to those already enjoying the performance. While we will try to accommodate latecomers where possible, it is likely that you will not be granted access to the theatre. If you arrive late and are not allowed in we regret that we are unable to offer refunds.
Concessions
Generally concessions, if available, are reserved for the over 60's, NHS staff and those still in education. Sometimes concessions will be limited to only one of these groups. If this the case the concession description on the website will clarify who it is applicable to.
History & Visiting Artists
Opening in 1997, the Alma Theatre is oldest pub theatre in the South West. Converted into a perfect black box theatre with 48 in-tiered seating from what used to be two separate function rooms, it is an incredibly versatile space that has seen hundreds of productions, many of which have been world premieres. It has strong ties with most local theatre companies and is committed to championing new writing from the Bristol Theatre Scene.
We have our own in-house Production Company, Schoolhouse Productions, which has gained a fantastic reputation for presenting classic texts, such as Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party, Ibsen's A Doll's House and Willy Russell's Shirley Valentine. Our most recent project, The Complete Works of Jane Austen (Abridged), saw a three week sold out run, outstanding critical acclaim and a subsequent 60-date full UK tour.
For many years Bristol favourites, Theatre West, held a seasonal residency of original writing. We work with university society's and amateur groups from the South-West to showcase their work as well as including some of the best touring theatre companies in our programme. Every season we have a host of varied productions that complement the diverse nature of the city and beyond.
If you are part of a local or touring company and would like more information about booking the space, either on a flat hire rate, or a box office split please contact Holly Newton and Ollie de Rohan our Theatre Management team at theatre@almatavernandtheatre.co.uk who will get back to you as soon as possible.
What to expect on show night
Up a narrow, characterful staircase, our 48-seat black box theatre is one of the most intimate venues in Bristol. There is no bad seat — you are never more than a few rows from the action, and the atmosphere feels closer to a friend's front room than a formal auditorium.
The bar is open before the show and during the interval. You're welcome to take a drink up with you — just arrive around 15 minutes before curtain so you can settle in without disturbing the performance.
Hiring the theatre
Our space is available to visiting companies on a flat hire rate or a box-office split, in our programme or as a one-off booking. If you are a local or touring company with a project in mind, talk to Holly and Ollie at theatre@almatavernandtheatre.co.uk to work out dates and terms.
Season programming & new writing
We programme in seasons throughout the year, with a rolling mix of new writing, classic texts, comedy, scratch nights and visiting work. We pride ourselves on keeping the programme varied and Bristol-focused — one week it might be a world premiere from a local company, the next a fresh take on a much-loved classic.
We are always keen to hear from writers and companies with a show ready to share. If you have a production or a work-in-progress you'd like us to consider, drop Holly and Ollie a line at theatre@almatavernandtheatre.co.uk with a synopsis, a trailer or show reel and your ideal dates.
Technical & practical info
Our black box seats 48 in tiered rows and comes equipped with a flexible lighting rig and a simple PA suitable for spoken word, small-scale music and theatre. Full technical specifications and a get-in plan are available on request — just ask when you enquire about hiring.
Get-in is via our rear stage door up a narrow staircase, and we recommend allowing a generous fit-up window. Our team are happy to talk through your rig, set and accessibility needs in advance so everything is ready when your company arrives.
