The Alma's Place in Clifton: A Neighbourhood Local

How a 19th-century pub on Alma Vale Road became a Clifton landmark — and what makes it a proper neighbourhood local first.

The Alma has stood on Alma Vale Road for well over a century. It began life as two separate bars; over the years it has grown into a pub, a 48-seat theatre and five boutique suites, all stacked across three floors under one characterful roof. But for all of that, it remains one thing above all: a neighbourhood local.

Between the village and the Downs

Tucked between Clifton Village and Whiteladies Road, we are a short stroll from Clifton Down, the Suspension Bridge and the boutiques of The Mall. It is the kind of spot you can drop into on the way somewhere, or stay in for the evening — a pint that turns into a pizza that turns into a show.

A local that does a lot

Under one roof we serve freshly cooked food, run live theatre, host weddings and events, welcome guests to our boutique suites, and run a Summer School for the neighbourhood's young performers. Come in, find a table, and see for yourself why a Clifton institution has been welcoming people for over a hundred years.
